The oldest reformed synagogue in America was built in 1841. Over time, numerous repairs to the exterior stucco included the application of a cementitious coating to help repel water. Instead, the coating cracked and allowed water to be trapped inside the masonry wall causing progressive failure of the stucco. To address this, the entire top finish coat of the stucco, along with the cementitious coating had to be carefully removed. The underlying masonry was repaired and a new historically based lime stucco, similar to the original, was applied.
